Lowering the cost of drugs, one delivery at a time
Last week’s story about farmer Hody Childress secretly funding his neighbors’ prescriptions had us tearing up at our laptops—and lamenting the circumstances that made his generosity necessary. Drug pricing has been top of mind for legislators and disruptors alike in recent years, and the pace of innovation picked up again last week. Amazon Prime members can now fill an unlimited amount of generic prescriptions for $5 a month. Optum Rx launched Price Edge, a tool that automatically provides the lowest priced drugs to members. And lately, it feels like you can’t talk about drug price disruption without mentioning Mark Cuban, who announced his investment in Truepill last week. Given the earlier snafus with the Truepill/Cost Plus Drug Co partnership, we suspect this move is to deliver affordable medications more seamlessly. With new prescription drug caps kicking into gear in 2023, we hope this year will not only usher in more affordable medications, but also increase patient access to effective drugs.
