A chance at redemption for consumer health tools
As the holiday season nears, the ghosts of personal health records and forgotten wellness apps past are stirring. Recent headlines have seen NVIDIA cementing its role as the go-to infrastructure enabler, with fresh partnerships across Verily, Innovaccer, and Diligent Robotics. Meanwhile, OpenAI is reportedly eyeing consumer health tools in a potential leap toward personal health data and/or “assistants.” Historically, consumer health data tools like personal health records and wellness apps have struggled to scale or drive meaningful clinical impact. But the combination of these tech titans’ compute power and data access with consumers’ growing comfort with AI in health contexts could rewrite that playbook—albeit with new risks around compliance, competition, and privacy.
The fact that Big AI is building healthcare capabilities while shaping the broader AI landscape may be the clearest sign yet that for once, healthcare is disrupting in sync with the rest of tech and society, not trailing years behind.
