AI joins the primary care practice

Healthcare’s AI revolution is shaking up primary care. Last week, value-based care company Lumeris launched “Tom,” an agentic AI-powered assistant for primary care that executes patient-facing tasks from scheduling appointments to administering screenings (e.g., PHQ-9) and answering questions about medication. As tools like Tom become more prevalent, it’s essential that primary care teams remain central to AI decision making and integration processes. Rock Health and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) joined forces to explore the potential for AI and digital health to address challenges faced in primary care. Today, we’re publishing insights from our survey of 1.2K+ family physicians and other primary care providers about their perceptions and use of digital health and AI tools. Sixty-two percent of respondents said they use AI tools like ChatGPT personally, and about half reported using AI tools for at least one use case at work—particularly for clerical tasks (32%) and clinical decision support (23%). Yet, 81% percent want more training to fully trust AI solutions at work, and 64% want education on legal, liability, and malpractice risks. Learn more from our survey findings about how primary care physicians use and view AI.
