Asking AI what to expect when you’re expecting
“Is this symptom normal?” “Can I eat sushi?” “Should I call the doctor?” Pregnancy—often an equal parts exciting and anxiety-ridden experience—can prompt a flurry of questions throughout its ~40 weeks. On the heels of Mother’s Day, we’ve been thinking about how pregnancy support is changing…and increasingly, featuring AI. Our recent 2025 Consumer Adoption of Digital Health Survey revealed that women who were pregnant in the past year were more likely to use AI chatbots for health information than non-pregnant women of reproductive age (60% vs. 42%). Among those who used AI chatbots, 84% reported returning weekly or more often. Conversational AI is scaling quickly as a natural extension of the ongoing digital information-seeking behavior that accompanies pregnancy, helping fill gaps left by traditional appointment-based care.
Recent digital health launches born around this need: Peanut’s new AI feature draws from conversations shaped by the lived experiences of its community members; Tot Squad recently acquired Robyn, an AI doula trained on real conversations between parents and doulas; and Maven Clinic launched Maven Intelligence, an agentic AI platform built on data points from Maven care journeys to personalize care.
Pregnant women are already bringing AI chatbots pressing health questions. For specialized maternal health solutions, there’s an opportunity to capture and keep existing patients by building trusted environments for ongoing needs.
When enterprises move into digital health categories without clear benchmarks, market sizing alone doesn't answer the hard questions. The Astellas Rx+ Business Accelerator partnered with Rock Health Advisory to evaluate a patient-facing digital concept across market dynamics, business models, clinical workflow, commercial viability, and partnership economics before significant resources were committed.
