Golden years, digital frontiers

Older adults are a diverse and influential group of healthcare consumers, accounting for 17% of the population but driving more than 50% of U.S. healthcare spend. Counter to stereotypes, a large number access their care and health information digitally. According to Rock Health’s 2023 Consumer Adoption Survey, 70% of respondents aged 65+ reported having engaged with virtual care and 67% have searched for health information online.

Innovating for the growing senior community doesn’t just mean tweaking tools and services to appeal to older adults. It requires understanding how seniors are represented in healthcare data and accounting for the financial and social risks that increase as people age. It also involves designing tools and environments that reflect the realities of growing older in a digitally-integrated society. Learn more about building digital solutions for older adults in the latest installment of our series on health equity-centered innovation opportunities.
