Knocking on healthcare’s door

News coming out of CES and JPM the past few weeks makes it clear that industry players see controlling the “digital front door” as an opportunity to expand healthcare access and market share. CVS may soon acquire Oak Street Health which, along with its investment in Carbon Health, allows it to join the ranks of Amazon, Humana, and Walgreens in providing digitally-enabled primary care. Meanwhile, big tech and retailers, including Amazon and Samsung, announced plans to extend patient and caregiver touchpoints digitally and in the home.

These digital health plays from tech companies and incumbents alike open the door to both attract new patients and expand access for existing patients. However, more must be done for these digital entry points to lead to long-term impact. Effective care coordination, a cohesive provider experience, and data consolidation will be critical components of integrating the care experience—and ensuring that patients see the benefit of these touchpoints in the form of lower costs and improved outcomes.
