Tech stacks for the short staffed

Hospital staffing shortages, particularly among nurses, have long been a stressor on the U.S. healthcare system. Shortages have only intensified during the pandemic. With 90% of nurses currently considering a departure from the profession, administrators are paying higher wages, fostering partnerships with nursing schools, and hiring traveling nurses. Twenty-six states have responded with legislation that expands the practice authority of advanced practice registered nurses. And in recent weeks, we’ve seen a number of startups addressing the issue gain momentum. Clipboard Health and IntelyCare raised $80M and $115M, respectively, for their staffing platforms that connect healthcare professionals with open shifts and long-term assignments. KLOC HEALTH is partnering with Mayo Clinic to create an on-demand tool that matches nurses to opportunities and forecasts future staffing challenges, while the launch of Emeritus Healthcare aims to upskill the workforce with online healthcare staff development courses. And of course, clinician workflow tools will remain center stage. A recent study suggests an organization's tech can be friend or foe when it comes to nursing retention—nurses satisfied with their EHR are more likely to stay, whereas those dissatisfied are 3x more likely to leave.
