What motivated you to pursue your current work?
In August of 2019, my dad had a double heart attack and by September he would be gone. Overnight I became the caregiver and healthcare proxy to my dad all while learning for the first time what hospice was. I did my absolute very best, but there was so much I did not know then that I wish I did. With little guidance, major decisions came up every day and I had to rely on Google for my dad’s final days. I can’t change the last chapter my dad had, but I can build a company that makes sure every patient gets the care my dad didn’t and every caregiver gets the support they need.
What distinct value does your work bring to the digital health field?
In digital health there is a clear avoidance surrounding end-of-life care. The focus is most traditionally on prevention, longevity, and curative which are all critically important. However, we are all going to die so to exclude consistently is the biggest missed opportunity in digital health. Our work brings end-of-life care to the forefront and creates opportunity for the field to truly design what dying should look like. For those who die, the ability to have personalization and comfort is invaluable and for those who must live on it presents an opportunity to address the prevention, longevity, and curative points we all know to be important in a person’s journey.
How does your work impact your target end-users or stakeholders?
We provide high-quality hospice care built for the modern patient and caregiver ensuring end-of-life care that provides comfort and pain management. Our work allows for people at the end of their life to truly have the transition they prefer. The support we create with our technology solutions allows caregivers to have a healthy relationship with grief and not feel overburdened during the care journey. Our partners experience better communication and trust to ensure their patients and/or members have a care continuum worthy of great last chapter. This sticks with all of our users throughout their lifecycle with our company.
What is one exciting update or near-term opportunity that you would like to share with the digital health community?
We are rolling out the ability for anyone, whether in our hospice care or not, to be able to receive bereavement services – waived of the 13 month CMS requirement – with just a simple text.
