Digital health startups respond to Supreme Court opinion leak

Healthcare minds and headlines were dominated by news last week that Roe v. Wade will likely be overturned by the Supreme Court. While there isn’t clarity yet on exactly how this will play out, some digital health startups focused on family planning are mobilizing to respond. Telemedicine companies that provide abortion pills to patients—like Hey Jane, Carafem, and Choix—are preparing for rapid increases in demand if in-person abortion services are fully or partially banned in many states. Some of these companies are raising new capital. Expectful, an app that supports preparation for motherhood, is adding abortion information to its content library about pregnancy loss. And to help organizations cover the cost of out-of-state care, Maven’s wallet app enables users to calculate costs and facilitates reimbursement for reproductive procedures.

There are more questions than answers right now, but one thing is clear: digital health entrepreneurs, employers, health plans, biopharma organizations, and providers will face a complex legal and regulatory environment—with impact on those they serve—should this ruling come to pass.
