Podimetrics is an interdisciplinary team of engineers, physicians, data scientists and entrepreneurs committed to improving the lives of patients with diabetes. The company was founded in October 2011 by graduate students of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University at the inaugural MIT Hacking Medicine hackathon. Of the 26 million diabetics in the U.S., more than a million will develop foot ulcers each year due to reduced feeling from peripheral neuropathy. Many of these patients will acquire intractable infections and 92,000 will ultimately require amputations. Aside from the terrible human price, ulcer treatment and foot amputation cost the U.S. healthcare system $71 billion annually.
