Bringing it home

March has seen new plays in home-based and hospital-at-home (HaH) care. Last week, DispatchHealth and Medically Home announced plans to merge into one of the nation’s largest at-home care platforms—combining Medically Home’s remote patient monitoring tech and 24/7 virtual command center with DispatchHealth’s fleet of vehicles and same-day, in-home diagnostic and care services. At-home kidney care provider Monogram Health also launched a joint venture with Memorial Hermann's health plan to bring multi-specialty care services into the homes of chronic kidney disease patients.

Meanwhile, some health systems are charging forward with HaH efforts. Mass General Brigham’s partnership with Best Buy Health expanded to co-develop “care orchestration” platforms that streamline the logistics (e.g., technology, supplies, staffing) required to bring inpatient-level care into the home. With the latest federal extension of the Acute Hospital Care At Home Program waiver (if only for six months), we may see HaH gain additional momentum this year. However, the road ahead is still uncertain: with evolving regulations and reimbursement pathways, HaH program consolidations and expansions into broader home-based care may be in the game plan.
