Clocking in
This year's AI firsts (AI prescribing, AI care delivery in specific contexts, and AI-assisted neurosurgery to name a few) are pushing into work once reserved for clinicians. With this shift comes a now-familiar anxiety—what will this mean for healthcare jobs?—made all the more important given that healthcare has historically served as a reliable engine of the U.S. labor market. A recent JAMA perspective challenged the prevailing view that AI’s place in medicine will remain alongside physicians, asking whether autonomous AI could eventually deliver better care than AI-aided doctors. This question has been asked of radiology before, but despite plenty of forecasting that this specialty could be displaced, demand is still on an upward trajectory.
Whether or not AI ultimately shrinks the healthcare workforce is still to be determined, but it’s already changing how that workforce is organized. A number of digital health startups that have raised capital this year are building around that reality: from workforce training and upskilling (Stepful, $55M), to recruiting and credentialing (Saile, $2.2M; Definity, $7M), to staffing optimization and workforce automation (Chromie Health, $2M; UnityAI, $8.5M), and workforce operations infrastructure (Worki, $2.75M). As the healthcare workforce changes, the needs around it will change too–the companies that can help clinicians and the enterprises that employ them adjust will have plenty to solve for.
