Hitched onto the acquisition wagon

Consumer genomics test provider Invitae is acquiring Ciitizen, a consumer health platform enabling patients to access and leverage their health records to find better treatment and trials. The $325M acquisition will create a patient-consented clinico-genomic data platform that empowers consumer decision-making and can be mined for clinical research and customer insights. The Ciitizen deal marks Invitae’s 14th acquisition over five years, continuing the company’s transformation from a hereditary genetic diagnostics business into a data-lined highway from the consumer to specialty care.

Deep insight and empowerment for individuals propelled Ciitizen’s growth, led by serial entrepreneur Anil Sethi. Will Sethi’s prior employer Apple see its broad-based approach to health records take off? Apple is banking that through integration with (currently) 700 hospitals and clinics and new sharing capabilities, they can avoid the fate of Microsoft and Google’s personal records foray.
