Reimagining kidney care

Fifteen percent of U.S. adults are estimated to have chronic kidney disease (CKD), and recent headlines have highlighted increasing momentum around better kidney care solutions. Last week Healthmap, a kidney population health management company, raised $100M, joining mega deals raised by Strive Health and Monogram Health earlier this year. These large raises for kidney care-focused startups are all the more notable in an otherwise tight funding environment. Additionally, CVS’s Signify Health just announced a new in-home chronic kidney disease testing service as part of its diagnostic and preventative offerings. Heavy hitters DaVita and Medtronic have also recognized the opportunity with the spring launch of joint venture Mozarc Medical, focused on developing at-home kidney care tech.

Inequitable disease burden plagues the kidney care space—Black Americans and individuals facing poverty or food insecurity are at disproportionate risk for developing CKD. And with 20% of Medicare dollars spent on kidney care, there’s a huge need to reduce costs in the space. Startups going after kidney care gaps have the opportunity to improve access, equity, and costs for millions of Americans.
