How Evolent Health grew to a billion dollar company and IPO in just four years

On Friday, June 5th, Evolent Health debuted on the New York Stock Exchange, raising $195M. Earlier this week, Evolent closed above a $1 billion market cap—a meteoric rise for a company that was founded in just 2011 with the backing of The Advisory Board Company and UPMC. Shortly after the market closed on Tuesday, Rock Health spoke with Frank Williams, the CEO of Evolent Health, about the company and the market for value-based care. Few people understand how provider organizations are approaching the shift away from a fee-for-service environment better than Frank. A lightly edited interview follows.

Digital health meets Wall Street: what it takes to IPO

I sat down with Peter van der Goes, Managing Director at Goldman Sachs and Head of HCIT.  The bank has led several healthcare IT companies to the public markets over the years, including Athenahealth, Allscripts, BenefitFocus and Castlight. I talked with Peter about growing public market interest in digital health and what that means for companies hoping to go public one day. How do you think about digital health and the way it compares to other sectors, like traditional tech and healthcare companies? Healthcare IT was historically pretty sleepy because the market was a sleepy part of the economy. With things like Obamacare and inevitable cost pressures in healthcare, we’re now finally starting to see real technology innovation, real data, real analytics, and real IT solutions inside the healthcare vertical. Although it’s early, it’s really exciting. We’ve also seen a tremendous amount of VC investment inside the vertical over the last 12 months, in contrast to biotech, where we’ve seen only a bit of a resurgence. The impact that digital health innovation can make in healthcare can be even bigger than the great innovations that the biotech industry has brought and can bear. There’s tremendous potential for efficiency, outcomes, and…

Deconstructing the Castlight S-1

After spending the week with Castlight Health’s S-1 filing, one clear fact emerged: Castlight is an extraordinarily young company. Despite how long many of us have tracked the company, the S-1 notes Castlight only sold and implemented its first customer in 2010. Four years later, and the company is preparing for a $100M IPO that will value it at a rumored $2 billion. We dug into the three years of operating history and other notes about the digital health company in the S-1 to make sense of the offering. Here are five things we learned:
