A tale of two tech companies in healthcare

Only one in ten US consumers say they’re willing to share their health data with a tech company. But new approaches for leveraging that data are fast emerging as the major tech firms eye their piece of the healthcare pie. Consider Apple and Google—last week, we saw Apple Heart Study results and the launch of one research app to rule all of Apple’s health research, allowing volunteers to sign up for three new studies.

Meanwhile, a whistleblower shed light on Google’s patient data-sharing partnership with Ascension, prompting a federal probe and stoking antitrust flames. The question seems to be less about the legality of such partnerships and more about patient ownership, trust, and whether HIPAA is sufficient in today’s increasingly digital world.
