Brace for impact

This week’s newsletter was meant to highlight new research on two areas of importance for digital health: a study assessing evidence of clinical impact, and an overview of interoperability innovation and opportunities. However, Friday’s news that the Supreme Court officially decided to overturn Roe v. Wade in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case is sending shockwaves through the U.S. healthcare system—so instead, we are contemplating the fallout. Beyond the direct, inequitable, and often devastating impact to health when individuals do not have safe access to abortion, there will be far-reaching reverberations on the intersection of digital health and reproductive healthcare: telehealth and prescription delivery, health data tracking, fertility procedures, and contraception. As the nation navigates the uncertainty of diverging state regulations, women’s health leaders are responding with resolve and intention to continue supporting patients and providers. As we noted when news of the potential ruling first leaked, the legal and regulatory environment for digital health startups just got murkier—but the call for entrepreneurs to innovate in service of women+ health has never been more clear.
