Impact examined

Just over a year ago, the healthcare industry braced for impact as the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case. As predicted, the proliferation of more restrictive abortion laws has introduced harrowing complexity and risk for providers and patients alike. Far-ranging impacts include reduced care access and growing inequities, new questions around the tradeoffs of data interoperability and privacy, practice limitations for current OB-GYNS, and a reduction in OB-GYN residency applicants. And just last week, it was reported that Planned Parenthood is conducting layoffs and restructuring.

Following the decision, innovators (Julie, Stix) moved quickly to address care gaps. And despite a rocky funding and regulatory landscape, firms are still looking to invest in women+ health. In recent months, we’ve seen sizable investments in the women+ health space (Thirty Madison, Kindbody, Pomelo Care, Intrinsic)—and plenty of opportunity remains for other startups providing creative avenues to care.
